1891 Article Manitou Pike's Peak Cog Rack Railway Colorado Mountains Abt MAB1

This is an original 1891 half-page article about the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway, a rack railway in Colorado. The Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway was started by Zalmon G. Simmons, and was founded in 1889. The railway's base station is in Manitou Springs, climbing the mountain Pikes Peak. The Abt system was devised by Roman Abt, a Swiss locomotive engineer. The average speed attained is 5 miles an hour and the rolling stock comprises 6 passenger cars, each with 15 seats for passengers, and weighing, when loaded, 10 tons. The train is supplied with power brakes, which are supplemented, for additional security, by hand brakes. In the descent, the cylinders of the engine are made to act as brakes, on the system devised by Lechatelier.

Pikes Peak was originally called El Capitan by Spanish settlers, and the mountain was renamed Pike's Peak after the explorer Zebulon Pike Jr. The Pike Peak is a mountain in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, near the Colorado Springs, Colorado, in El Paso County. The mountain is a designated National Historic Landmark, and the site of the Pikes Peak Ascent and the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
